The big question this week seemed to be: When will practical quantum computing arrive? Some leading figures in business and technology offered their best guesses at the quantum timeline.
Are they right? Are they too optimistic? Too pessimistic? Does it matter? I suppose, first, you have to define both of the terms, “practical” and “arrive.” But, second, if the question of when quantum computers will move from the lab and into the real-world is important to you, it really becomes a risk calculation.
To prepare for quantum computing can be fairly inexpensive — education and training is cheap, if not free. If you’re interested in the adoption of quantum technology on an organizational level, forming study groups and engaging in pilot projects are low- to no-cost endeavors. Watching how this technology emerges is also pretty inexpensive (I even know a website you can follow and can give you access to data to help you monitor…)
And, if quantum doesn’t arrive for decades or even never arrives, you haven’t lost that much of an investment.
But, if you don’t prepare and decide to wait until that quantum moment arrives, then the costs of trying to catch up might be significant. A couple of “ifs” here: If AI is a guide and if quantum is as transformative, or more transformative than AI, the fast-follower strategy may not work.
So, again, one person’s prediction is as good as another person’s… but you do have flexibility in how you prepare for the future of quantum computing, whatever the timeline.
